The date was April 5, 1980 at
the Red Carpet Celebrity Lanes, Milwaukee, Wis for the $125,000
Miller Highlife Open. 25 Year old, Alvin Lou qualified 1st. Lou
faced the 1979 bowler of the year in the championship match, Mark
Roth. Roth could never get going, but it didn't matter. Lou
started with a spare, and then reeled off a 8 bagger on his way to
winning the championship title, and $21,000 over Roth, 259-203. I
remember Lou as very animated on TV, in fact, he was one of my
favorites to watch. It's amazing to see how powerful of a ball
release he had. No too many players had the cupped wrist and crank
at that time. I also remember how each time he made the TV show,
the crowd would always chant "Lou, Lou, Lou!" Lou was
also the winner of the Steve Nagy award in 1979 for good
sportsmanship. I think I once read that currently, Alvin Lou is
operating Alvin Lou's Drilling Room in El Cajon. Please excuse the
sound, as it is a little grainy in this video. Thank you to Brian
for providing the video, as well.
